E.B's The Settler - Watervale Riesling 2016

E.B's The Settler - Watervale Riesling 2016

Region - Watervale, Clare Valley, South Australia

Vineyard - The fruit for this wine was sourced from the WSS Vineyard and Darry Honey’s Vineyard, both located in the Watervale sub region of the Clare Valley. These vineyards are in close proximity but produce vastly different wines. When blended they give the perfect balance of finesse and fruit quality. Both vineyards have soils of red loam on east facing slopes with east to west row orientation to maximize daily sunlight.

Growing Conditions - The growing season leading up to vintage 2016 was dry with rainfall well below average, however it was not the amount of rain that had the largest impact rather it’s timing. We were gifted with just the right amount of rain at just the right time for maximum impact on the vine’s health and the quality of the fruit. It was these conditions that will make vintage 2016 one to remember.

Winemaking - 2016 was exceptional year for these small parcels of Watervale Riesling with ample natural acidity coming from the vineyard. Machine harvested, then a gentle pressing using only the finest free-run juice and fermenting at cool temperatures allowed us to create this delicate floral wine. The wine was fermented dry, slightly fined, filtered and bottled.

Winemakers tasting notes - This 2016 Watervale Riesling has a bouquet of lemon, lime and wet slate with a hint of floral notes. On the palate the same zesty lemon citrus notes are accompanied by a tight mineral line. The lingering finish is well balanced with crisp natural acidity. For those who like their Rieslings crisp and fresh, this wine can be enjoyed now, but this is a wine that will gain complexity over 8-10 years.
