Gleeson & Co Clare Valley Shiraz 2016

Gleeson & Co Clare Valley Shiraz 2016

Growing Conditions

The fruit for this wine was grown on the western ridge of the

Kirribilly Vineyard which surrounds the winery. This vineyard consistently

produces some of our best Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Growing Conditions

Early spring was very mild and dry giving rise to early bud burst and very

fast vine growth. By mid-October vines were well advanced and tracking

2-3 weeks ahead of a normal season with most flowering complete by the

start of November. After a hot dry December, rains in late January and

early February were most welcome rebuilding soil moisture and slowing

ripening. A mild February rounded out what is considered to be an

excellent, if early, vintage.

The technique of cold soaking was employed for this wine, whereby the

grapes were crushed and chilled to the fermenter and allowed to soak

without fermentation for 3 days. This technique allows for the gentle

extraction of colour and tannin before alcohol and heat play their part.

After fermentation in open fermenters, the wine was then matured in

500L puncheons prior to bottling in August 2017.

Winemaking Notes

A deeply coloured wine with dark cherry and fruitcake aromas, hints of

chocolate and oak. The palate is rich with soft tannins and has excellent

Analysis - pH 3.60 | Alc. 14.8% | TA 6.g/l
