Vineyard - The fruit for this wine was sourced from the Tullymore vineyard in the North eastern foothills of the Clare Valley. This vineyard has produced medal winning wines ever since the first crop. Grown on deep red loam and quartz volcanic rock on east facing slopes with an elevation of 450 meters makes this one of the best sites in Clare to grow Shiraz.

 

Growing Conditions - Above-average winter rainfall provided a great kick start to the growing season. A dry and mild spring lead into a mild early summer and it wasn’t until February that ‘normal’ summer conditions emerged. February however turned out to be a very hot month and vintage operations cranked up in earnest in the first week of February, some 2 or 3 weeks ahead of what is generally considered ‘normal’. Despite the early start and the fact that the hot conditions brought most varieties into a similar ripening plane, the resultant juices and subsequent wines are showing fantastic varietal definition with good flavour, structure and excellent natural acid…all the hallmarks of a vintage with great longevity potential.

 

Winemaking - All parcels of the Tullymore vineyard received a 5 day cold soak in open top fermenters in order to softly extract the dark and brooding characters of the berries. Fermentation occurred at low temperatures over a 5 day period in order to retain aromatic intensity. The ferment was regularly pumped-over to maximise colour, flavour and tannin extraction from the skins. The wine was pressed off to a selection of 35% new French oak and 65% second use French and American oak hogsheads. The wine spent 20 months in oak and after went through a rigorous barrel selection prior to blending.

 

Winemakers Tasting Notes – The 2015 Vineyard Selection Series Shiraz has a complex aroma of black forest cake - dark cherry and chocolate with oak derived characters of coffee, biscuit and roasted nuts. Also present are hints of black pepper and spice. The palate shows bright upfront red fruits of cherry and blackberry followed on the palate by fine chalky tannins and a long savoury finish. The wine shows great length and balance and promises significant aging potential.

 

Ageing Potential - If cellared correctly, this wine will continue to reward up to 15 years in the bottle. The optimal drinking time is in 3 to 5 years although can be enjoyed in its youth.
