Region - Clare Valley, South Australia

The fruit for this wine was sourced from a well renown premium vineyard located in the Clare Valley wine region. The vines were planted on a west facing slope on deep red loam over limestone. The vineyard has been dry grown since planting.

Growing Conditions
Early spring was very mild and dry giving rise to early bud burst and very fast vine growth. By mid-October vines were well advanced and tracking 2-3 weeks ahead of a normal season with most flowering complete by the start of November. After a hot, dry December and January, the rains that followed in late January and early February were most welcome to rebuild soil moisture and slow down ripening.. A mild February rounded out what was considered to be an excellent, if early, vintage. 

Prior to fermentation the fruit received a 4 day cold soak in open top fermenters in order to softly extract the dark and brooding characters of the berries. Fermentation occurred at low temperatures over a 5 day period in order to retain aromatic intensity. The ferment was regularly pumped-over to maximise colour, flavour and tannin extraction from the skins. The wine was pressed off to a selection of 35% new French oak and 65% second use French and American oak hogsheads. The wine spent 20 months in oak and then went through a rigorous barrel selection prior to blending.

Winemaking Notes
The wine is a deep vibrant red with a bouquet of cherry, boysenberry and cranberry. Barrel maturation in French oak provides a sweet nutty complexity to the aroma and polish to the palate. The palate shows fruit sweetness, soft tannins and a smooth seamless mouthfeel.
If cellared correctly, this wine will continue to reward for up to 15 years in the bottle. The optimal drinking time is is 3 to 5 years although can be enjoyed in its youth.
