Vineyard Selection - Clare Valley ‘Tullymore Vineyard’ Shiraz 2014

Region - Clare Valley, South Australia

Vineyard - The fruit for this wine came from the famed Tullymore vineyard in the north eastern foothills of the Clare Valley. This vineyard has produced medal winning wines from the very first crop. The deep red loam over quartz volcanic rock on east facing slopes at an elevation of 450 meters makes this one of the best sites in Clare to grow Shiraz.

Growing Conditions - Adequate winter rains followed by a warm August / September set the vintage up for near perfect conditions. The vineyards maintained good shoot length, canopy coverage and bunch numbers. During verasion it was clearly noticeable that the vine crop was very low. A January heatwave nearly undid all the great lead up work until 90mm of rain fell and slowed the ripening process. The result was an ideal run up to harvest producing fruit with an abundance of flavour, colour and structure.

Winemaking - All parcels from the Tullymore vineyard received a five day cold soak in open top fermenters in order to softly extract the dark and brooding characters of the berries. Fermentations occurred at low temperatures in order to retain aromatic intensity. The ferments were regularly pumped over to maximise colour, flavour and tannin extraction from the skins. The wine spent 20 months in French oak barrels and went through a rigorous barrel selection prior to blending.

Winemakers tasting notes - The 2014 VSS Tullymore Shiraz has lifted and brooding notes of black pepper and olive tapenade with hints of cedar and dark chocolate. The aromas are complex, layered and continually change in the glass. Delivering surprise and intrigue the palate is rich, plush and full of black berries and melted dark chocolate coupled with cassis, black olives and liquorice. The palate is silky with soft subtle tannins balanced perfectly over smooth rounded acidity. The fruit is neither sweet nor savoury but teeters on either side which is a true hallmark of this famous Clare vineyard.
With good cellaring this wine will continue to reward for up to 15 years.

Analysis - pH 3.4 | Alc. 14.7% | TA 7.5
